When SSgt. Kyle Vogel leaves a handwritten letter on the seat of his car, grabs a pistol and steps into a Minnesota forest, we wonder who he is and what he’s about to do. Flash back a few months as Vogel lies wounded in a hospital near Anbar Province, Iraq. The night before he’s due to return to combat, his doctor, Lt. Kelly Tripp, presses him on why he’s so obsessed with collecting battle souvenirs. Kyle proceeds to tell her what happened on Memorial Day, 1993, when, as a 13-year old boy, he discovered his Grandpa Bud’s WWII footlocker. Though reluctant to talk about the war, Bud, who served with the 82nd Airborne, strikes a deal with Kyle: “Pick any three objects, and I’ll tell you the story behind each one.” As we see Bud’s WWII tales from Europe, we also see how Kyle’s experiences in Iraq have paralleled them-and how that day on the porch will affect how he ultimately deals with the losses, regrets and moral dilemmas that unite all soldiers across wars and generations.

But he no longer has the supercomputer known as the Intersect in his brain; for the first several episodes it’s in Morgan Grimes (Joshua Gomez), with Chuck acting as “handler” as Morgan uses and abuses its astonishing powers, until the Intersect eventually turns up inside a sinister villain later in the season. Chuck and his crew of “free agent spies,” which also includes tough guy John Casey (Adam Baldwin), weren’t exactly a crack team to begin with (“We’re still working out the kinks,” as he puts it). Now they have to find a way to stop the monstrous “Omen” computer virus (the season’s best storyline), foil many baddies (guest stars include Rebecca Romijn, Cheryl Ladd, and Craig Kilborn; Linda Hamilton and Bo Derek also put in appearances), and otherwise save the world without the Intersect, and a good many of their missions come down to exercises in mere survival. None of this is what you’d call cutting edge; it’s escapism, pure and simple. But Chuck‘s refreshingly light touch also allows for some poignant moments (especially in the finale) and an appealing family vibe.
Chuck isn’t the first television show whose devotees reacted to its cancellation by campaigning furiously to bring it back. As is usually the case, they were unsuccessful, but a lineup of fan-friendly bonus features may help ease the pain. Not only do the cast and crew pay tribute to “the world’s greatest fans”; they even predict how the show might have evolved had it been renewed. There are also featurettes about making the final episode (plus audio commentaries for the last two) and Chuck‘s beginnings and development through the years, along with a blooper reel, commercials for the Buy More store that serves as a front for the spies’ operation, and more. –Sam Graham

Set in modern day India SWADES (Our Country) is a film that tackles the issues facing the citizens of this nation on a grass roots level. In his attempts to persuade Kaveriamma (Kishori Ballal), the symbol to him of mothehood and family, to return to America with him, he gets drawn intro the life of a village called Charanpur and finds himself searching for answers to the questions of progress and development that the village is facing. His curiosity is piqued by Gita (Gayatri Joshi – film debut), an admirable young woman teaching in ithe village primary schoo, who chooses to live here despite problems like casteism, prejudice and a lack of basic amenities. The film uses the contrast between the highly developed world of NASA, which has been at the forefront of advances in space research, and this world back home in India, which is at the crossroads of development. What was a simple mission, prompted by nostalgia and affection, turns into a journey into the heartland of rural India, both literally and metaphorically. His quest becomes the journey that every one of us through in the search of that metaphysical and elusive place called ‘home’.

It’s classic Hitchcock all the way, a seemingly effortless balance of romance and adventure set against a picturesque landscape populated by eccentrics and social-register smoothies, none of whom is what he or she appears to be.
